In any war, the military force that cannot wash, eat, or sleep is the force that will inevitably lose. They can't fight a war and also hunger, disease prevention, and beyond-the-pale levels of fatigue. This is clearly demonstrated in Ed's inferred services to this first party. The strike team (Alexis, Gonzo, Tia) needed a good support and he was all of it in one. In contrast, no one else wanted to adequately fill those roles, leaving them subject to sabotage from the enemy.

The only true disrupting factor, is why in a war that is clearly lined with genocide being the outcome, would any human force LIMIT the amount of support being given to the strike force? That was the real recipe for failure.
