Huh, didn’t see it from that angle, but now that you mention it it makes sense.

Honestly I think the reason for that is that the characters are all so exaggerated to a point past the suspension of disbelief. All the girls are cute and potential wife material depending on taste, but they're so "perfect" that they become uninteresting. Their "flaws" don't really feel like flaws which makes them all feel 2 dimensional and boring to read.

They're all so unbelievably high spec that the comparably plain Tanaka becomes the resounding best choice purely because they feel the most like a real character instead of a carboard cutout.
