You make a good point, and even in the LN, the author emphasized that most of the demonic path cultivators let out their inner demons and are calculative and ruthless—however, there is a spectrum: some demonic cultivators are just plain evil while others hold their own principles no matter what (Zhuo Fan is the second type, someone who even the righteous path cultivators can respect 👌)

When the artist draws her like that, we know how she’s gonna turn out 😌
In the light novel, her description was very much hinting towards this as well

they are actually the “good” guys in this demonic sect, while the oldies factions with Venerable Shi, who stick with the traditional ways and are preventing the sect from growing, are considered the “bad” guys of the sect. That’s why the Sect Leader brought Zhuo Fan in to disrupt the old ways and start a revolution from the grassroots. Later on, due to matching interests, Yue Lin and Kui Lang become Zhuo Fan’s underlings and follow his orders in the sect

Even with how OP the author makes Zhuo Fan, the author never goes easy on Zhuo Fan plot-wise. With every gain, an even greater loss follows…

It becomes more obvious later on, but Elder Yuan is actually the High Venerable of the sect (meaning he is the strongest), and currently, he is much stronger than Zhuo Fan. He is also the sect leader’s master. It’s just that he trains in the True Self Art, which appears to regress his cultivation level but actually brings him closer to his origin. His actual power is at the peak Ethereal stage right now :)

Shaoyu had a somewhat unstable heart from the start, even though he comes from a supposedly “righteous” sect, but after an encounter later on with a demonic cultivated, his inner demons pretty much took over him, and he becomes more and more envious of Zhuo Fan and his relationship with Chu Qingcheng (whom he has feelings for). Nothing goes his way regarding Qingcheng, so Shaoyu resorts to using his position as son of the sect leader to force Qingcheng to dual cultivate with him and become his wife. Despicable scum and hypocrite “righteous” cultivator.
