Sadly the manhua doesn’t show too much of it, but in the LN:
The old man never revealed himself to be of importance in the sect, so of course he doesn’t tell Zhuo Fan much about the sect—just how it works in general. BUT, Zhuo Fan’s respect for the old man comes from the old man sharing his deep insight into the Dao. The only reason why Zhuo Fan hasn’t turned the sect upside down (probably) for sending him to the Laborer’s Office is because he can talk to the old man about the Dao and improve his mental state and heart. In cultivation, understanding the Dao and dealing with one’s inner demons is the most important, and it can make someone much stronger than another person with the same cultivation but a lesser understanding of the Dao. :)

Oh don't worry--there are MANY more satisfying kills to come ;) He is probably the most calculative person in the mortal realm. Of course his clansmen and adopted children (the sacred beast offspring) and qingcheng do cause him trouble, and sometimes he does get duped (he's still human, after all), but he will find ways to overcome those obstacles--in the most satisfying ways possible 😌

Additional spoilers on his "flaws":The only thing is--he doesn't understand any woman's heart, except maybe qingcheng's 🤔 it can be to the point where he can expertly foil the smartest Prime Minister's plans but not realize a girl is smitten with him. Dense MC type...

Spoilers on the old man:

Elder Yuan is definitely a good man, putting his all for the sect. However, he changes Zhuo Fan in the best ways possible, enabling Zhuo Fan to achieve higher levels in comprehending the Dao. Too many people focus on just cultivation and neglect understanding how the world works (Dao), and as a result, they will lack in strength compared to other people with the same cultivation but a deeper understanding of the Dao. Yes, Zhuo Fan will face many troubles for maintaining a good heart despite using ingenious tactics on the surface. But because of his improvement in understanding the Dao from Elder Yuan, he becomes too strong for these troubles to be of much bother. Also, this allows Zhuo Fan to ultimately be able to choose Chu Qingcheng instead of walking a lone path ;)

Even deeper spoilers:
Elder Yuan ultimately passes down the True Self Art to Zhuo Fan, which is an art he made himself that focuses on one’s heart. This art ultimately helps Zhuo Fan surpass all others and transcend sovereign stage :)

It was never mentioned in detail, but here is the gist: (and the gist is all you will need to know ✨)

For context, the double dragon gathering is an event held at the Double Dragon Manor, which is the leader of the Western region of the Mortal Realm, and this event determines which disciples from western sects get to train at the Manor and receive tons of resources and guidance. Since Demon Scheming Sect is one of the lower three sects, they don’t get much resources and also don’t produce too many experts to send to the double dragon gathering. Last time the event was held, the four fiends of hell (the fourth one being Xie Wuyue) were the only ones to barely survive it and return to their sect. This might seem shameful, but of course the four fiends spun the story to make it seem glorious, and Xie Wuyue even got to be the Sect Leader.

Even further spoilers:

Later on, you’ll see just how powerful the middle three sects and the upper three sects are—they have tons of ethereal stage cultivators and even many soul harmony stage elders and venerables (this is the stage above ethereal stage). If Zhuo Fan were not with the Demon Scheming Sect, this time the disciples probably won’t even survive—except for maybe Gui Hu. The gap between the lower three sects and the upper three sects is astronomical 😭

I finished the LN recently, so I can answer any questions ;)

This chapter is Ch 549 in the Light Novel, and Zhuo Fan and his group official enter the Sacred Realm at Ch 1177. Zhuo Fan faces off against the his original targets of revenge for the first time on Ch 1203 (they have a gambling match). Zhuo Fan takes about 70 Chapters after that to completely finish off every single one of the Eight Emperors (which includes his traitorous disciple ✨). The revenge was very sweet and his revenge against his disciple was most poetic 👌

All in all, it will take quite awhile for the manhua to catch up, but you can bet I’m looking forward to all of this being drawn out 😌

Those are the three fiends of hell, the survivors of the double dragon gathering (the fourth fiend is Xie Wuyue). They are about as strong as the venerables, if not a bit better. They are a bit weaker than Xie Wuyue, since he was the strongest among the four back at the double dragon gathering. One of them is Fiend Yang, described as Fatty Yang in the Light Novel. I see no big belly here, sadly 😔

To make the hierarchy a bit more clear with spoilers:

The current system in place at the sect is difficult to change because it has been in place for thousands of years, and the only precedent of someone from the Labor Office rising up is the High Venerable. In this chapter, they make the High Venerable seem like one place lower than Sect Leader, and the High Venerable can never reach the Sect Leader spot. However, in terms of power, the current High Venerable is much stronger than the Sect Leader, and he even is the Sect Leader’s master—he decides who gets to be Sect Leader (behind the scenes). To prove this is true: later on, the High Venerable made Zhuo Fan the Sect Leader (of course, Zhuo Fan has to earn the approval of most of the sect first) and basically demoted Xie Wuyue (current Sect Leader) to a Venerable position.
