It was progressing well for a moment there, but the railroading is kinda absurd. Mr. Main Character lost his initial characteristics and is just generic Mr. Main Character. How generic? Well, you know the insult used to dunk on manhwa MCs looking... well, like normal dudes instead of stupid anime hair and absurd outfits? Well, he looks worse than that.
Personally, I hate stupid anime hair and absurd outfits. I still think he looks and acts bad for someone in his position. /shrug
Now, if she was his direct unambiguous love interest without any of manga's usual nonsense tropes, the situation would be different.
The only problem is that their relationship is being developed like the two idiots are middle-schoolers instead of what they actually are: almost 30 year old grown independent adults.
Sigh. Freakin' manga and its tropes.
Here we are, with this Mr. Main Character getting a free ticket to regress infinitely with his dearly beloved. As any regressor will tell you, having someone accompany you will turn that hell into heaven.
I feel like the beast will walk straight into Big Bad Evil Guy's hands due to all these shenanigans. Bleh.
The reason I keep reading, now that I thought about it, is because it could prove me wrong.
The real problem is that I don't like waiting for updates.
then he's almost winning
then something happens
and it's a draw, so... oh well
because this manhwa refuses to allow things to just happen. I do wonder why I still read this.
Honestly? Do I even need to elaborate? Mr. Main Character is more-or-less an entity fueled by the desire for revenge/vengeance/rage/anger/etc. Some guy waltzed in, acted one way, and then betrayed everyone. Mayhem ensues and Mr. Main Character is left, arguably barely alive and very much seeking one thing in his life.
And from this manhwa, from when he was
and later on, etc etc
I'm too lazy to find a panel to screenshot him screaming as a grown up.Edit: see replyWhat this manhwa doesn't excel at is the overall plot. It's quite is mehhhh. It does that thing where you start off with the setup already prepped, but a dozen chapters in, it goes through "how did this all happen?" phases and then 50 chapters later, it goes into the bad guy's origin story. I gotta say, I don't care about the bad guy. He gets like THREE grand reveals on who he is and all that, etc etc but who cares? Can we get to the part where Not_Guts fights him already? Enough introducing new minions that we have to get through first!
It's also worth noting that I don't think Mr. Main Character got any stronger from the start of the manhwa until the end. It pretends that he did, with him getting new forms and all that but they're like adding posters to a wall -> the wall's integrity isn't being supported by a poster that's hanging on it. It's just the manhwa's author had a story to tell and he can't have Mr. Main Character win so... "oh look, he lost. Moving on."
So, powerscaling is a wash.
Listen, if you want to see big angry guy that's not Guts turn into a big angry dragon, then look no further. Beyond that, don't expect too much. 6/10 I guess
Did I mention that I cried? Because I did.
Strategize as he might, he cannot win
Build teams and strengthen them to become the strongest people on the planet, he cannot win
Power-up as he might, he can't even control himself, but even still he cannot win
Try as he might, with anything and everything possible, he cannot win
He even begs an oracle for help. She glares at him, big eye staring at his eyes telling him... "Give up, you can't win." Credit to him, he didn't give up... yet.
Eventually, he runs away. He had a crush on someone and begs her to leave with him. They live happily for a decade, then the world ends. What does he do? He does it again. Again. And again and again.
At this point. everyone is an NPC to him; even her, practically being just a puppet. He says something and people respond with something he already heard. This time, as the world around them is ending, he confesses everything to her and... she ponders for a bit; what could she do now that she has never done before? She asks him to kill her and then never find her again; let this last memory he has of her feature her as a person and not an NPC. She refuses to be nothing more than a puppet.
So he does, and goes nearly insane, rampages against the final boss, obviously loses, and regresses once again.
What's left? Well, if you can't beat'em, join them? The final boss offered this path so, at least it's something new, right? This leads us to the timeline that is the start of this manhwa: everyone getting abilities through a program that he setup to speed up the final boss's plans. This "spawns" in Mr. Main Character and his potential is so high that when the regressor kills the oracle, she still tells him his fortune... and it is to "Not Give Up." ... Is this a joke?
Here's a thought that popped into my mind as I typed this: What makes this different from the garbage that is "Kill the Hero?" One thing: it earns every ounce of feelings that it stirred within me. It is NOT some superficial garbage along the lines of "look! It's a person! Oh look! he stubs his toe and feels pain! Isn't he so relatable? Now look! He's dead! CRY! DO IT! CRY! CRY!" Bah! Screw you!
Why read this one? Well, as the title and cover art shows: Mr. Main Character's ability is a unique on: clones. His clones are, and this is important: actual clones and not holograms/illusions. If they get stronger, he gets the benefits. If they get hurt, he doesn't feel it.
Where does this go from here? Well, it certainly went far. When I say "far," I really mean FAR! Like, I was hooked as all the little triggers that were spread around -> get pulled all at once and a big ol' plot pops off.
Honestly? I have so much to yap about but it is complete spoilers, so I'll make a reply to this with all that (character limit go brrrrrrrr).
But if you ask me? Honestly? 10/10. I don't give this score lightly and I know some would disagree but I really liked this.
I have a feeling I know what it means... but I haven't read it yet. I just read chapter 1. Chapter 1 is really directly targeting Solo Leveling with Mr. Main Character dying brutal deaths -> but look, video game menus!
Again, this is just chapter 1 alone but like... Who is Mr. Main Character? Why him? He doesn't deserve it. If anything, he REALLY doesn't deserve it but the mangaka behind this work is just throwing more power on him to make sure he succeeds so he (the mangaka) can tell this story. Not a great start, tbh.
Will I read it? Probably.
I like the dungeon hunter genre and, I'll have you know that this is important: you should read garbage of the genre you like. I'm serious! Think about it: without something bad, how can you anything good still maintain its "good" standard. A star alone is brilliant... for a while. You get used to the shine and eventually, in your eyes, it fades despite the star's shine not changing at all. But, take that star and put it next to a dumpster. Now, every single time the star's shine dims a bit, you focus on the dumpster for a moment and the star's shine is rekindled all over again. Everything the star did right shines all the more brilliantly compared to the dumpster's failures.
With all that said, maybe this isn't a dumpster of the genre. Who knows? I will after some time goes by.
