Generic doesn't make a story 3rd rate. This was the point. Over 200 years into stories, and the last 50 years exploring every cliché, we've reached the pinnacle of stories. Every story has elements that exist in other works, but the best authors sew them together to create something enjoyable to read. Generic isn't a good qualifier for poor quality
