I guess the idea here is the shoes have the same vis energy that the opponent relies on seeing if no visual seeing. Or sensing I guess since surely shoes would look different than a whole person.

There is a alternative, they could fight as a team. I've seen comics that had good team combat, it's very rare though for some reason. I guess it is more of a challenge to write for.
