This isn't so much a power up as it is being hellbent. He has had the capability to use it, just didn't for fear of his life and the planet. My best guess to the thought process of our MC is that the world is screwed anyway if berserk doesn't die here.

They are completely out in the open. Unless they go fully berserk or monsterify, I don't think this time they are dead. At best locked up in a straight jacket and buried 600ft underground.

I think this series handled it well compared to the norm at least. He is not being ignorant or dismissive of anyone's feelings, setting a clear goal before getting into that stuff, and conveying that he wishes to do so after everything is said and done. While I'm not entirely happy either, he's being responsible which is sorely lacking in many of these stories.

If they toned back the obsession a bit I think her character would be fine. But in it's current state, I agree that it's annoying, aggravating even.

There is two main problems information wise on the enemy side:1. The Big Wigs. With their pride and competition, it's hard to trust each other even if they are telling the truth. This leads to situations like at the beginning of this chapter.2. The Goons. They are being treated as disposable and using the same tactics they probably used for other "troublesome rookies" which is human wave tactics. This leads to situations like at the end of this chapter.All in all, it's more so of a bad info network than being stupid.
