Humanity on it's own was never on par with any demon lord, especially not Dwight. It's "the will of the World" that keeps spawning new stuff every time, the only reason Diera accepted alliance with Dwight is because she wasn't created or chosen or empowered in any way by the will of the World otherise she would have kept going at Dwight until he killed her.
Plus it's not like the people he's been going against were weak, most enemies he had to outsmart or he lost to and just resurrected again. No fight so far has been easy except the new Hero from the start.

Religion is clear and public about who or what they worship and how they worship Them/It whereas cults only reveal such information to their initiates sometimes depending on ranks. Also cults tend to have an "Absolute leader" or an equivalent figure and use peer pressure, excomunication and entrapment tactics (often not always) to retain followers.
