Have at her you depraved degens.
Now we have youths growing up with brainrot like cocomelon, skibidi toilet and over the top immature youtubers doing dumb shit being fed into their brains constantly and shaping their views and interests as opposed to actually well thought out and mature stories such as LOTR, gladiator, berserk or for kids things like veggie tales or the old disney movies that actually had character and morals and wasn't just trying to push some bizarre agenda that contradicts the common human experience.
I feel the recent adaptation of LOTM is a good example of what I'm taking about. While the art and animation is superb, the direction is a total mess, forgoing the opportunity to capitalize on the building tension and lived in feel of the city that was so masterfully portrayed in the novel to instead create a jumbled eyegasmic mess of colors and action, at the expense of everything else. LOTM would have been so much better had they taken a cue from old thriller mysteries like the zodiac killer, and such an atmosphere would have fit the world and tone of the story much more accurately without compromising the integrity of the work as a whole. And why didn't they go that route? Because the directors decided that to modern day audiences, Chaotic action with over the top animation = Peak. Intellectual and emotional maturity be damned. Or at least that's how I see it.
And don't even get me started on the "modern isekai crap" that you so eloquently pointed out, that shits 90% garbage.
That all being said, as somewhat of an aside, I also somewhat disagree with the "No goal, no substance" attribution to some of the older shows you mentioned. The thing I feel that needs to be said concerning them is that while they are labeled as adventure, action, fantasy etc, what they really are in essence is slice of life stories in which we gradually see the building of characters throughout a journey, they don't need a goal because the journey holds more significance than the destination, although there typically is some far off goal they are working towards of course, to be clear. A more accurate description of them in my opinion would be "No goal, but full of substance" if anything, although I fear it to be an exaggeration considering I completely understand your point and where you are coming from.
