The way I understood it is that the "Mark of Death" is what allows the killing blow, meaning they only injure other people they attack. Though if that is the only way they can kill then that bonus effect of them ignoring defense would come at a heavy cost. So maybe they can still kill normally?

He told them to kill the kid, now they seemingly did and yet they still punished him for speaking up in the last chapter? And they are rather hard and mean to him. I mean, sure he might be a bit annoying, but he doesn't deserve that. I hope the Holy Sword will get better treatment in the future chapters.
