From deduction with monster breeding being incorporated into schools, you can assume that monster taming has always been a thing. Thus the calamity may have been monsters that were "barely manageable" to evolve which would take time to hit "safe zones". More so if after the calamity they regrouped, fortified, and invented to further postpone the "apocalypse" from happening
