Possibly, but a fresh reader doesn't know this and frankly neither, does the MC. The real issue here is how the writer handles character development and consequences for decisions made etc....

This manga may have some really weak writing but at the very least its not completely sporadic. Rest assured, if Dai had not been there, he would have killed them. He didn't just spare them on a whim, he was convinced by someone he respects.

If you want to see MC murder people without regard read Overlord. Then maybe you might grasp properly contextualized actions by an MC from decent writing.

everyone acting like they knew the old man was what is implied here. Unless you already know this, up till now there was no reason to believe he was as powerful as he seems now. There were suggestions he might not be as he appears, and he might even be the sect leader in disguise. It wasn't till the past few chapters that he could be either or. Certainly next chapter will likely fully confirm who he is and why he seems so different from the rest of them. (namely spending all his time in the labor office despite being so high up.) Then again, if you're that powerful, who would question you?

this old man is just too awesome. he has the temperament of an excited little boy but the wisdom of an ancient sage.
