The fight doesn't make much sense to me though, if this backstory can make the fight make some kind of sense, it'd be way better than a fight to me.

The thing is the whole bit seems based on a real thing. I bet this 'arc' if you want to call it is based on a real thing that the author is basically venting about through the story.

I think one of the preparations is communicating with one of the great honor guilds to convince them of what is happening. Then they also need time to get there, normally off fighting great dangers. That said, how do you prove something happened without video camera's etc. Plus you need to prove the people who attacked were members of the Iron guild.

I think it's something like a agreement with the kingdoms that adventurers be self governing. And considering how powerful levels and adventurers are, it would be difficult to govern them too much anyway. In principle if a guild did something too egregious and you could prove it, one or more of the three strongest guilds who are normally off stopping extreme dangers might turn against you. So if they could prove they were attacked by the Iron guild outside of war declaration, that would be assured victory with the aid of one or more of the greatest guilds. Which is why there is resistance to declaring war yet.

But if war is declared then all bets are off, as long as they don't attack people outside the guilds in question.

Another possibility is Helmet knew Alea was female for awhile now. Question of how much Helmut understands that Alea is actively keeping it a secret though. Helmut is both keenly perceptive and dense at the same time sometimes. And Helmut seems to have a great lack of interest in anything that isn't specific of interest to Helmut. Like Helmut has tunnel vision only really paying attention to specific things of interest that get extreme attention and everything else is roughly ignored with disinterest.

Also Helmut lives in this world of humans with great secrecy, so I suppose appreciates other people wanting to keep their own secrets and does not pry, in the slightest, not even in stray thoughts.

A ongoing issue with rock paper scissors is you can see what the other party is going to do and respond a moment after they make their move. I wonder if two hands out and pulls one away hinders or helps with that issue.
