You're right about, sleep poison would make the fight pointless but sleep and lethargy to an extent should've been allowed (+ other minor poisons).
Though I can say that the tang clan's hidden weapon arts are the way they apply poison so training them more would help in an actual battle, But even the simplest poisons not being allowed to mimic a real situation in which an opponent would be weakened is silly.
