None of the characters here are really physically threatened, they're just fighting within self constructed constraints which isn't new to OP MC stories, MC isn't really being balanced he's just trying to appear weaker than he is while getting out of that situation. They weren't going to fight to win in the first place, it'd be too easy and would defeat the whole purpose of posing as talented human adventurers.

Yes, but that doesn't really feel like what's happening here, MC isn't trying too hard due to trying to fit his crafted identity and to not hurt those around him, it's also plausible that level doesn't necessarily reflect strength 100% in the case of oni-martial arts, though I doubt talented onifolk can do more than momentarily surprise the main cast due to being no more than twice their level in attack power and nothing else. Plot seems fine as of right now.
