Heya. I think the manga was trying to get across that the main reason he chose warrior was his father's influence. It was more of an abusive household afaik, I believe he was worried about his father kicking the shit out of him and disowning him more than anything. I don't know if it's super clear though tbh. I think it's sort of described in a vague way to hint at it without saying it.

Edit: I went back and checked, if it is for any other reason than just the disparities between warriors and mages at the time then it isn't well shown or it's shown later on. It seems to be that he just made a bad decision as a dumb kid. Immediate bonuses vs long term bonuses.
