I can't assume your friend knew you'd catch up so quickly... but they should've at least said "ready slowly so a few more chapters can pop up by the time you arrive at the latest chapter" or some something along those lines.
I do avoid this problem when handing out recommendations, personally, by just recommending completed manhwa; like Trinity Wonder or Villain Unrivaled.

In the defense of Solo Leveling, not that your opinion is wrong -> it was rushed starting season 2. There should've been more moments of downtime where the main character gets to just... be human.
All of that, plus a lot of dungeons, were completely cut from the manhwa. You can find them in the novel though.

Why? The author was sick... very sick... and he rushed the series due to his condition and the "big guys up top" did not care at all... despite all his effort, he did die before Solo Leveling was complete. Rest in peace. I heard that his death did bring about some reform in how manhwa artists are treated, so they are treated better than before.

Shame we don't get to see his full face of disappointment.
