Okay this series is fucking awesome, it's like a Japanese guy only learned about Americans from buddy cop movies, Looney Tunes and screwball comedies. It's utterly strange and ridiculous while also being strangely normal, like it has Adult Swim energy mixed with The Perry Bible Fellowship while Also being utterly Juvenile.

Yeah like you could maybe argue for 1890-1920 era tech but then they would have guns and powered boats instead of crossbows and sailboats (or at least alongside them ) like the degree to which some parts of technology have advanced versus others implies a world with little to no cross-discipline application of technology. (Like they have photography already but no long distance communication other than birds and couriers) (or how they have tanks but no powered transport otherwise. Even though early tanks were essentially armored cars with big ass guns nailed to them)

I've read many standard generic fantasy stories with equally "medieval" settings without slavery or where some countries use it but others frown heavily upon it, it's genuinely just dependent on what the author chooses or how grounded or grim they are, and in regards to my "Wish fulfillment" statement - the vast majority of Isekai series are some manner of wish fulfillment or power fantasy especially if they are the slice of life variety. including this one to some degree. like the vast majority of Korean series I've read that take place in a heavily historically inspired setting just don't have slavery in them or only have villains that engage in it on a small scale or in specific places. with worldbuilding and advancements still being plenty logical in progression due to things like Magic or Fantastical creatures and various fantasy races, like this series started in a forest with talking flowers and giant birds - it isn't neccesariliy grounded enough to justify slavery being an absolute essential.

It's a matter of taste and people have different mileage on things like this, some people are fine with the overly common trope of the "Good guy Slaveowner MC" with their harem of slaves and some find it conceptually disgusting, the same way some people like a murder happy MC with little qualms on taking life and others prefer one who puts some value on that. And in regards to "historical accuracy" and "things that are part of the setting" unless you're actually committed to a grounded realistic world with realistic history it is absolutely reasonable to find the inclusion of slavery in this fantasy setting as part of a genre largely built on wish fulfillment at the very least odd. Like it's not a history book it's a heavily fictionalized setting and as such any choices made reflect either the author/Editors or at the very least the genre in which these tropes are common and foundational.

The passage they are in is the connecting skybridge between the two buildings, so opening a hole above or below would open up to outside, and they can't go outside during the event so he can't open holes that would allow that.

Honestly fantasy does this alot, especially Japanese fantasy, always tossing out "ancient" mechs and shit. Forgotten civilizations that are just fallen sci-fi dystopias, or having a dwarf with a conveniently Gun-shaped magic weapon. Or "Alchemists" that are 100% just doing gene-splicing, or "Artificers" that are making "Golems" that are absolutely just robots.
I've learned to accept it so long as it doesn't take over the story.
