From that explanation that's fair. But usually when I hear edgy it more so applies to characters that are overly serious or severe(or violent/aggressive/grim) for their setting or in general.

You've made no attempt to understand my point, some people have goals that aren't specific but continuous- that's it. Nothing about this is particularly controversial or strange. Your opinion is that this meaning of a goal should be disregarded but you haven't adequately explained why. Like it's distinct - not specific, he wants to do this thing most of his actions towards the goal of this thing and he takes every opportunity to engage in this thing, but once again odds are he will gain the goal of hunting this magic after this encounter.

Edit: The difference in our examples is motivation and Passion, he hunts because it fulfills him and he likes doing it - his goal is hunting because that's all he really cares about - it's what he strives towards through most of his actions and what motivated him, trash is taken out as a utility, it you're stated goal was to maintain a clean household and it was the only thing that fulfills you then taking out the trash would be part of your goal. This is primarily what I'm saying.

My use was perfectly fair, the term is valid in this case if slightly hyperbolic. But I'll agree to disagree.

I mean, he's already hunted several so he can back it up a bit, and your trash example isn't a good comparison as it isn't continuous. A better comparison might be an artist that wants to continuously challenge themself, or a boxer that wants to fight stronger and stronger opponents, the goal is the journey so to speak, it's a goal about continuous internal satisfaction as opposed to a specific major accomplishment. And as far as trends go, Black clover is still doing just fine and I'd argue that series is in the style of writing that was commonly used way back when Naruto was first running, people appreciate a throwback sometimes so long as it has charm and a degree of awareness.

My only point is that gon isn't a zero on the feral child scale, though I meant it half jokingly initially.

And his whole guild would let you know it too!

It's only childish if you don't live in a world where that's actionable, but he does live in a world where that's actionable so it's actually a solid goal.

One definition of feral pertains to animal like behaviors, the other simply means to be wild or untame, I'd argue he partially matches both of these traits without fully pertaining to either so yes he'd be "kind of" feral. He was only loosely raised and mostly kind of just growing up on his own with occasional help from the village and kite much like this protagonist, and acts mostly on instinct and feeling as opposed to logic and reasoning. The word that exclusively means of or like an animal would be beastial. (I'd also argue Goku at least when he was a kid was absolutely a feral child mainly because he was quite literally raising himself in the woods after his granddad died hunted his own food didn't have any schooling and acted nearly entirely off of instinct.)

I mean he has a pretty distinct goal it's just a continuous goal like the one Goku has, he wants to challenge himself and hunt stronger and stronger prey, much like Goku's continuous goal to fight stronger martial artists. Though given the way these types of arcs usually go his goals probably going to be to hunt this magic from this moment forward.

I'd say "kind of" feral, mainly when compared to like the rest of his friend group he's a kid that didn't really know much about the world kind of just hung out in the woods for most of his childhood and only really went out to "hunt" his dad, see mostly acts on instinct and first decision and while he thinks things through sometimes is initial action is mostly instinct most of the time. Edit: those descriptors aren't actually mutually exclusive and often coincide (feral and predator)

Yeah but like luffy he's happy-go-lucky and relatively positive so long as things don't pertain to the one thing he cares about, like Lucy's pretty amicable in time so long as you don't say you're going to be pirate King around him or bother people he's friends with, this main character is the same way so long as you don't rouse his hunting instincts either by being pretty huntable or by bothering innocent people. Gon is probably the closest mainly because he's also kind of feral with a weird yet specific moral code except his built entirely around rather you benefit him in his friends or not,(like that time he was totally cool with that serial killer because he helped him and killua train)

I wouldn't even call him edgy I think the word they use is most accurate - he's feral, like other than hunting he's pretty happy go lucky chill and amicable. He's honestly closer to Luffy than he is Ichigo.

He's calm collected and has a badass scar clearly he's the dark clone as opposed to the evil clone, like shadow the hedgehog. Or Wario the Italian.

Ballsdeep69 The Nomad - 1737361354
Dr dooms got to be my favorite example of this type of s***, like how the first time they did marvel zombies he stole Richard's body and then he stole his body back just so that Richards couldn't sacrifice himself heroically and look good, even though that damned him to the zombie dimension for a while. or that time he went back in time to save his mom but then decided to kill her to prove his resolve or some s***, or that time he got sent back in time a long ass time and instead of doing anything about it or making a time machine or something he just made a throne and sat in it for like thousands of years and waited, like time traveled back to his time the long way. And if I remember right there's a couple times he's just straight up like fixed massive problems purely to spite reed, only for reed to spite him by pretending like it was part of his plan to make Dr Doom do this. Like he's so prideful but about really weirdly specific s*** so he's ready to do any matter of bizarre b*******'s to prove a point. Like the many times he's just made a doombot and then let it get its ass beat so that he himself wouldn't have to suffer the humiliation of defeat even though it meant that everybody would think he got his ass beat anyways and he only ever corrects people on it occasionally like sometimes he just lets it ride. Like he just lives with goals beyond everyone's comprehension even his own sometimes, like I'm pretty sure there's been multiple times where he swapped himself with a doom bot unknowingly after f****** something up.

Yeah cuz instead of him being like the "sidekick friend that's weirdly obsessed with his main friends love life" this comes across way more as the homie who remembered a chick he knew who might like his bro.
