I honestly like where they are going with it. It is giving us a chance to see more of the ML before meeting FL, even if it is on the more cruel side. We also get to see more of how the blood cut operates while not being in the shadows anymore. Nice world building, but it is clunky and ruined by to many romance notes.

That is exactly why they are neutral. A tool insinuates the lack of self guidance which, in turn, dictates good/evil by the actions they chose. Not being able to or not caring fall under neutral's domain of influence.

He himself is neutral. However, following an evil boss makes him a temporary evil. That's at least how I used to format it out while DMing.
