The story explained how I see it (without spoilers):
"I am trapped in the cage of my own pitiful existence [...] in this life and in the last." Is a quote from the FML (Ruby), and sums up her struggles quite well I'd say. Season one perfectly captures Ruby's struggle for survival and acceptance. Life has always been unkind to her, but she has mastered the act of deceit. However, this act has its own twisted price. Season two... is best described as a test. This season is especially uncomfortable for many readers, as it uses uncomfortable topics that play with your heart as you desperately hope to see the end of the dark tunnel.
Positives:
- FML is likeable
- Well written characters (Villains and side-characters alike)
- Great pacing
- Most actions aren't shallow but reasoned (Not to confuse with justifiable)
- Art and direction is great - pulls you in
- Better than average translation/grammar
- Emotional and mature (Personally, I like to be rattled: (upset, nervous, happy) and this story does just that.)
Negatives:
- The unresolved or otherwise unsatisfying conclusion of season 2
- Dragged out resolutions caused by lack of communication (this is purely personal because I feel like it's lazy writing)
- The Magic. This is where I think the story's scope becomes too big. Magic is introduced as being part of the world, but it is rarely used and is never actually explained. Why don't the character's suspect magic or use it for daily activities? If magic is part of the world, why is it only used to fight monsters? I just feel like there is some unused potential here.
- Lack of proof. More than once, the lack of concrete proof makes for some decisions which feel unjustified or irrational.
I was nauseous and anxious for the resolution, and I get this? What of the slow but sure satisfaction of turning everything around? What of that hellish brother? None of this makes sense...
I just realized, the birds really do symbolize Ruby's character.
