I can't really get into this; it started off strong, but now it just feels kind of lame and messy. I mean: ffs, author-san, having your readers not knowing wtf is going on is not building suspense, it's building up a drop.

The difference is: horrible use of punctuation; there is a defined difference between quotation marks - AKA, "inverted commas" - and apostrophes.
