Religion is clear and public about who or what they worship and how they worship Them/It whereas cults only reveal such information to their initiates sometimes depending on ranks. Also cults tend to have an "Absolute leader" or an equivalent figure and use peer pressure, excomunication and entrapment tactics (often not always) to retain followers.
