The crusades were all political wars in nature. Either to mask internal conflict, return lost political power to the Church or to justify pillaging the so called "Holy Land".

edit : Upon verification, the crusades diidn't happen when the Church had weak political power like i said but rather when they had just regain their political standing and wanted to consolidate their place. Same-ish reasons but the distinction ought to be made i think.
