Well there are some things that convince me that Frieren may be one of the great mages mentioned. Firstly she defeated the demon king, she has a holy wand emblem (just like the mage Minus), her mana level is consistent with someone who has lived a millennium, with Frierens help humanity developed effective demon killing magic later to be known as ordinary offensive magic, and her knowledge and wisdom of spells are constantly growing. In the humans eyes I think those accomplishments are enough to classify her as a "great mage". We all know Serie is disappointed in Frieren because in comparison to her age her skill is lacking, but the term "great mage" is a term coined by these humans (at least I think). I can be wrong though and it would be cool if they introduced some new OP characters.
