It's automatically set to private when you create the account, which makes sense since most people would prefer it that way. But it feels liberating when you turn it off as it sort of exposes yourself to trolls and the like. Luffy's crew acts more like a free-spirited adventure squad while Shanks truly acts like a pirate. Shank's crew hardly gives any second chances when you cross their line.

I don't want to say that they deserved it, but it was a natural consequence after they decided to kick the hornets nest. Especially since Shanks has an amicable relationship with Luffy, now that relationship may be a bit strained.
