Shirosawa manga have always been acid trips. They are all avant-garde and I love them because of that.
They stick out from all the average stuff even if they lack in some areas.

It's less that he was portrayed as an asshole and more like she kept pointing out that single moment for her hikikomori status. The dude was only introduced into the story a few chapters ago. It's like holding a grudge against your old highschool friend who punched you randomly, only to find out years later that he was forced to do it by bullies and if he'd said anything they'd beat him up. It's not fair to hold onto that grudge and judge the guy for being an asshole when you just found out the reason was a misunderstanding. The years of hatred is unjustified now, even if he was an asshole in your mind all that time, the truth came to light instantly. That's not a redemption arc, it's clearing up a long misunderstanding with the truth. Even if that misunderstanding made him out to be the devil before the truth, it's still just a misunderstanding in retrospective.

The hate is absolutely unjustified. The dude made a single mistake years ago, sure that mistake was costly, but he wasn't an evil person who kept traumatizing her over and over again. Yes he should've come clean and that caused more pain, but the dude was living in his own private hell too. This isn't redemption, it's understanding.

What an overrated manga. I can see why it would be popular for it's time though. The first 7 or so volumes of this manga is some of the most boring, fucking infuriating shit I've ever seen. Joe before his character development is one of the worst characters I've even seen. Even after his development he's still sometimes an utter misogynistic, violent asshole. The manga picks up with the Rikishi vs Joe post-juvie arc, and I liked carlos. But yet again, they made it less about boxing and more about brawling. I don't see the love for boxing in this manga than I do Hajime No Ippo. Which is my 2nd fav manga. The boxing in this manga is not important at all. There isn't any variety, rounds last a few pages and Joe doesn't demonstrate any skill in the sport besides relentlessness. You could swap out the Boxing for underground street fighting and nothing would change. The story was a meandering slog with nothing to say. Art was decent to good, I don't have any qualms about its age, I don't judge things based on it's age because that's dumb. Despite Rikkishi's death being one of the best moments in anime and manga I've ever seen, I can't give this manga any more than a 7/10. The first 7 ENTIRE VOLUMES is a 1/10 though. Fuck that shit.

I also quite like this manga. But not for the reasons most do. I literally don't care that it's a soft-core hentai. I like most of the characters and the interesting premise of amateur film-making. I'd still read it without the erotica. Though the erotica serves for the commentary on the character relationships and dynamics with each other which leads to wild and/or unorthodox scenes such as walking your teacher like a dog wearing nothing but a bikini who's being filmed pissing herself by her student in public. You can't find that really anywhere else, so it's interesting and unique and that's needed these days with media stagnation.
If the author made the characters college students, or better yet, film college students, then I'd have no issues with the spice. But the fact it's with minors really sucks me out of the experience. Literally could explore so much more if they did.
