After reading Hajime no Ippo last november (2023), and hearing that this manga surpasses even that masterpiece for a lot of people, I finally get to read this. I try to wait a while between reading or watching things that are similar, i.e How Hajime no Ippo is a boxing manga as well as Ashita no Joe, but I can't wait any longer!

No but seriously, having a cold in manga is like dying of the bubonic plague with how much it affects people.

It's a 4-koma. It has 4 low effort panels per page, nonsense filler stories with actual plot development occurring only every 50 chapters, with a premise that can't handle conventional formatting lest it crumble underneath the self-inflicted character bloat so far that would need another 10 years of fleshing out each character so they actually matter and aren't some useless digit on a list of people who don't even spend time with komi-san and are just acquaintances, not friends.

Anyway, It might not have started out as a 4-koma, but it definitely devolved into one, perhaps because the author can't tell a story compelling enough to adhere to a conventional format and decided to make it a "moments in the life of komi-san" manga rather than any coherent story, because Komi-san's story is garbage. Things don't always start the way they end, Yu Yu Hakusho started as a 90's slice of life and ended as a battle royale between demon gods. Komi-san did the same and ended up as a 4-koma, because the author refuses to tell any sort of compelling, structured story. So they slice it up into a 4-koma to prevent it all falling apart and as an excuse for the constant character hopping and 1-note character gag strips. I mean, would you expect a fortnite or among us arc in another other manga besides a 4-koma (that isn't Gintama or something).
There are 4-koma that have 1 page mini-stories in all their pages of a chapter, and there are 4-koma that tell singular stories per chapter or mini-arcs in a few chapters. Though some 4-koma do reference past events or stories, and some don't. Komi-san is a different type of 4-koma because it was Frankensteined into an utter boring mess of 500 different characters that would not realistically have enough equal time to have character development, and as such we have what we have today, a boring, character bloated, nothing matters except an actually important mini-arc every 50 chapters or so before we get the same status quo of unimportant filler and gags because barely any characters have any development, and the author refuses to give any other characters development because that would impact the 4-koma design it's adopted, and it's obvious that there are still way more characters going to be introduced because Komi needs 100 friends. And the author knows that conventional manga would not be able to support 100 characters, as well as add each characters circle of characters that are important to them, because they also need parents, friends, teachers, and so on. 100 girlfriends who really, really love you is an outlier and handles multiple characters equally greatly as said by Gigguk. Though they only have around 40 characters or so that are important to the narrative. Seriously, who the hell can you name from Komi's friends list that isn't the main 10?

It literally fits everything a 4-koma is.

It's manga that have mostly 4 panels per page, and usually don't have any narrative and is just random moments. And Komi-san fits that formula to a T.
Something like Tsurezure children is a good example of a 4-koma, a 4-koma I actually like.

This has been my least favourite arc, It's dragged on so long. I really hope the confession happens, I'm losing my mind!!
