I think whatever it is has to be large enough for the portal to show up on it, so I imagine people are wary of accepting tapestries and whatnot as gifts, since they seem to be the most common mobile transportation surface in this world. That being said, Sherry could in theory roll up a tapestry and stick it in one of her item boxes from her explorer job. They seem to allow explorers onto the island but not adventurers since explorers don't have field walk to let tradespeople out with.

Alternatively, he could change his primary job to something that wouldn't raise suspicion and take the portal from the neighboring town again. IDK there are a lot of things he could be doing with his abilities but instead of it being plot holes I think he's just not great at thinking on his feet (as evidenced by Roxanne having to be the one who suggested they use warp to get into the labyrinth to skip out on entrance fees)
