I think it's a badly written trope. The author could had added stuff Alba reconise as "the plot still moves forward" and play it as anxiety instead of certainty. Twould feel better then.

Since they've made such a huge deal about not wanting to lose what they've built, I can imagine a few things that could happen, but most involve the MC getting back on time.

Still, there is a second option, and is the red head mercenary king that we left fighting up in the cold. He might win the battle, raise an army (because he is good at raising mercenaries) and bring them as reinforcements. Meanwhile, as they got the major supply of magic crystals, MC might bring some gifts for our mages and allow them to unleash hell once more.

And make ya lose opportunities because your focus is on the wrong place.
