I don't think it was really hostility per say, i do think they were friends and remained friends even after the time skip, but like TheFool said earlier he most likely felt offended that the higher ups suddenly usurped him for Kana seemingly hours after she arrived back on the ship. Like if you got passed up for a promotion to a guy that left the company a few years prior after he got caught embezzling or something. If the author was trying to "push christianity" why would they link christian scripture/ iconography/ etc. with the very obviously evil faction that the reader is supposed to root against. If anything that only serves to do the opposite by making it seem as if the scripture itself is evil, or that its being misappropriated by a bad actor. You're taking the mere presense of the scripture at face value without any regard for the way its being presented in the story.
