High ground matters if you need to run at your opponent if they are under cover or can't keep using the gun because of limitations in ammo amount and reload time. Whenever the gun stops being a element of the combat high ground matters again. But while gun is a element of battle it generally doesn't matter much. It matters slightly since bullets can technically travel father that way, but at the range where that becomes a factor, accuracy is shit anyway, with old fashion guns especially.

But two sides with lots of ammo, modern guns, no cover and no feeling to need to charge at the other side. One side being half way up a hill on higher ground will not really have any advantage over another side at the base of the hill.

Sniping is a bit different because high ground gives you better field of vision with less obstacles, but still depends on being hidden. A sniper is super exposed if enemy knows where they are, cover aside.

I get the feeling that we aren't really disagreeing that much and some people are just misunderstanding me a bit. So let's not argue this anymore. Though I still flatly disagree with Flashplayer that aiming upwards makes a significant difference in accuracy.

Sure, but that's got more to do with other factors like being able to duck behind the cliff cover and not so much the high ground itself. Bullets will for sure travel a bit farther down than up but it's not a big difference. A army on a hill with rifles won't really have significant advantage over the army at the bottom of the hill. How does high ground help with surprise. Maybe quicker to run into enemy range before they realize you're there? But really you should be hiding in or behind something. Low and high ground really don't matter much with guns, with extremes aside.
