The mages are pretty strictly anti-god because their power are directly in conflict with the power of gods, but Night Sky has more or less given them a non-interference policy and just enough support to keep them neutral without really getting promised anything in return. So while the mages aren't under night sky, they shouldn't be an active opponent, so it's a step in the right direction for MC.

He kills pretty much everyone who enters his dungeon though? Not sure that counts as letting people walk all over it.

Books are very good and the movies one of the worst adaptations. Not as bad as like Artemis Fowl or Avatar the Last Airbender, but still basically not Percy Jackson.

The Percy Jackson series had some really good moments about that, specifically in the "Heros of Olympus" quintiligy, which is a five book sequel to the original five books. The writing is very young adult in quality so it's almost too easy to read, but his exploration of themes and deep character writing is extremely good and ai highly recommend the series to anyone who hasn't read it, especially for people who are looking to read something to kids or other youngling in their lives.
