Not sure how you feel about realism in a fantasy setting? Or would it be fantasy in a realism setting? Anyway, if either of those are for you, "Paranoid Mage" is my current manhwa recommend.
Although I will add an asterisk and say that the storyboarding could use work. There are times that the MC suddenly becomes knowledgeable or deals with something offscreen and you're just left to piece it together yourself (like how he suddenly comes out with terms like shifters and vampires or learns magic with no fanfare or leaving an elf in a cave (I think it implied he killed them)) Or how common sense factors get overlooked for plot to happen (like how he's a space mage but doesn't think to use gravity as a weapon instead of bangs (don't want to use too many trigger words in one post or i'll be getting a knock from the feebs) or how a certain hacker girl becomes a focus because of "a hunch")
Anyway, think Harry Potter, if Harry was introduced to magic in his late 20's and Voldemort had already won. Set in America (I believe) in "our world", MC survives an apparent terrorism incident and the people that scoop him up mistake him as a mage meaning he now HAS to work for them, given absolutely no choice in anything. Obviously this doesn't sit right with him, so off he pops. Hijinks ensue and he ends up as a fugitive assassin.
Bit of a jump there, I know, but it makes sense how it happens.
