From what I remember from my visit to Eyam in Year Three, many many moons ago, the plague started in fleas.
Can't remember if it started out as something benign to them and gradually evolved into pestis or if it was just in them, though.
So fleas infected rats and then the infected rats infected even more fleas.
So it *may* have been a sealed container job, afterall.
But all my knowledge regarding plague is from literal decades ago, so take it with a pinch of salt.
