I think this looks more like Korea, they need to cross the sea to arrive at Japan.

The Chinese sucked at building ships for sea travel and traveling at sea in general. Most of their boats are for traveling across rivers as there are 2 large rivers that span the entire country and it's impossible to go around them. The few ships that do go out into the sea are usually fishing boats or for traveling in coastal or shallow waters.

The problem is that one of the Tang clan's foundational rules is to be respectful and hospitable to guests bc the Tang clan is famous for their poison despite being a justice faction so they need the people to trust them.
So if it ever gets out that a guest that was staying in the clan and scheduled to compete in a duel was poisoned by the elder of all people outside of the duel, the Tang clan will lose all trust from both civilians and murim alike. Because if they could poison their guest, what would stop them from poisoning everyone else.

Well, the novel did have an open ending so choose whoever you want.
