I find it interesting that the story says there are 6 billion people on earth, which makes me wonder did 2 billion die because the current estimated world population is about 8.2 billion today. I did some researching and apparently humanity reached 6 billion on October 12, 1999, which is interesting since that is really close to the turn of the millennium and many people thought the apocalypse was going to happen in the year 2000. Did this story ever state what year it is in universe, I know they all have smart phones but given that this world has magic powers maybe that accelerated technological development.
