readers are forgeting the most important thing about the martial arts world. It's not that the weapons don't work per se. It's that the martial artists (MA) have bodies that are extremely tough. Once a MA gets to peak rank 3, their bodies are harder than steel. Most likely the higher the grade of weapon the more % of otherworld metal is used to create it.

The main reason that they use more primitive weapons is
1) the ability to find the necessary materials to craft
2) the ability to refine such intricate weapons
3) the transition of superior knowledge to a civilization that has the resources in abundance

to be even more fair, this is the accumulation of knowledge for 3 years. Where MC is still a 1st year. It's hard to keep up with the knowledge that's suppossed to be passed on when you advance so quick.
Also, MC relies on cheats and higher cultivation, ie 3x reforge, to kill instead of technique

so he "prioritized" himself instead of going after mc running away, then when he came back noticed a rank 3 solo killed 3 rank 4s, and still left him to die prioritizing himself again

School hazing -> won against peak 1 martial artists as a entrance martial artist
School mission -> won against entrance rank 2 martial artist as a peak rank 1 martial artist
School tournament -> won against students less than him to entrance rank 2 as a peak rank 1 martial artist
Cult extermination -> won against a peak rank 3 martial artist as an advanced rank 3 martial artist

Fang ping has consistently fought and won/killed martial artist higher than himself

Just going to throw this out there...
1) there are people who are trained in group tactics. They just weren't strong, so they failed to be a part of the strategizing.
2) even if they were part of the strategizing, usually you don't throw a bunch of newcomers into a war. Even if you don't use a grandmaster to kill lvl 3s, they should have been there to lead the conversation to teach. Instead the schools want them to learn through deaths of allies to make them more ruthless.

Why talk on the way to an ambush?
Why travel in a large group on the way?
What kind of strategy is "Let's just go!"
What kind of morons wouldn't realize that their compound was surrounded?
Who would dare to sleep without caution exposed to enemies?
What kind of military intelligence is so sloppy? They shouldn't have surrounded until they had estimated numbers of enemy/civilian, structure layout, weapons identified, ect, and rule of engagement for the mission.
Where are the military resources for this mission?

There's still more that I find dumb but this shows at least a small part of how stupid these kids are
