The reason it happened this way is probably cuz the author realized exactly what I just did; that he basically dug himself a hole where this was the only way out.
So let's say that soon, in about a dozen chapters, the nature of his existence will be something the readers need to know for context. But, in the setting only some extremely high-up, too important to currently appear in a satisfying manner, group has the actual info.
Well then you can't pull them in as they're to play a role later in the story, but you need the info to be shared. Mind you, the method was inelegant and boring, but likely done out of necessity.
Personally, I wish there was a bit more exposition from that guy about other schools of magic to give context to how significant his creation of black magic is, other than that one necromancer earlier. We also have no idea what species he is or why he created black magic, let alone its limits.
