The first one is completely fine tho? It makes him look serious. Only second one looks goofy when he's supposed to be normal. The artist isn't that bad at expressions, for me I'd say they're just absolute dogsbit at maintaining quality of facial features compared to previous artist (for me its mostly the problem with his chin and face lining), probably because they need to try to blend with the previous artists style which is difficult for the current artist....probably.
Oh and, the art isn't as bad as AI generated. Just average I'd say. It's not to the point that the expressions make no sense, it's just varying.

Edit: Examined a bit closer and I realised the main problem stems from the movement of facial features each time, my main problem would be the jawline making the characters look ugly as f*ck, second being the changing placement of the mouth and their the chin shape.

One of the good axed series is "A Breakthrough Brought by Forbidden Master and Disciple". Try reading it, it's nice but it ends quickly with basically the end of the prologue, it didn't even start the actually main story.....
