Late 50's, my dude! When a youth is overly impressed with my wife's comic/manga/cartoon/anime knowledge she tells them "It's a survival trait, baby. I married your king." (A little bit of an exaggeration, but it makes me feel good.) My comic book collection stems back from the 60's and my wife would buy me anime box sets as gifts (Pre-streaming, of course).

I think it's one of those moral right vs legal wrong issues. Like that knight defending those dwarves. It's like they're teaching him that there's consequences to his actions, even though they're morally justified. I got caught up in something similar irl in the 90's. My actions contributed to preventing a coworker from becoming severely injured, but I got written up for violating written procedure. I'd do it again, but now I have the wisdom to know how to get away with it.

Please allow me to clarify. I used to think they only harmed themselves and that the parents and friends they stole from should pay more attention to who they let get close to their valuables, and that they had their own circumstances. But then, in a prior career, there was an 11 year old middle school girl. She loved school, being with her friends and spending time in the library. She missed school for a week. Each day her mother called in to tell the school that she was staying home sick. Come to find out, her parents were whoring her out to their dealer to feed their habit. By the time she was rescued and returned to school, she had become a violent psychotic mess. From this I came to a realization that with junkies and dealers it's all a matter of desire and opportunity. If that scum had been removed from society that little girl's soul wouldn't have been shattered the way it had. The last I checked she still isn't right.
