If it was only a test of might, they wouldn't have chosen the twins. I think the previous chapter was to test his character and determination. Would he kill his brothers, and would he feel bad about it?
I don't really understand what they are testing here now. Purely his magic and determination? He clearly doesn't want to fight, but they are pushing for it, why?

I feel like the author wanted to have a bit of the MC's character development shown, and also a bit more of his background from the previous life.
But the author didn't know how to make this organically, so he just brute forced it via a "test".
