I think he was mentally shaken by being informed of mcs death, as well as seeing current mc use same martial arts. Definitely wasn't on top of his game.

Really like that they didn't do the classic, I'm immune to the poison so I get all the benefit with no drawback bs most stories do.

It would be cool if the current asshole alliance leader realized that someone was pulling the strings, didn't like it and decided to ally with mcs old strategist and then ended up reforming and on the mcs side in the big conflict.

Seems to be a theme in the stories by this author.

Nah I think I like the way park heejun was slowly introduced and us learning he had history with mc and not knowing what it was, and after someone claims/reveals he was using mc the whole time we see the backstory. I'm not saying it would be bad the way ur suggesting, it would just be a very different story, and I think this works better.

Hmm. I don't think I agree. I think a big appeal of this series was the mc starting out strong. I think this style of art and storytelling work well based on that premise, unsure if it would be as good the way ur suggesting.
