Bit of both. Over time he fell in love with the her in the game since by the time we see him in Chapter 1, his entire life basically was the game.

Then things coming becoming real just solidified that for him in an undisputable way.

Let's not forget, in real life we've had stuff like people trying to marry video game/manga/anime characters and we don't have the excuse of technology that lets you experience the medium as if you're actually there or characters that truly can grow change and adjust based on what your non-limited actions instead of just pre-made lines and a limited amount of options to choose from.

Honestly? Considering what she was saying this chapter about what she'd be willing to do for him and the last fight she had with one of her clan went?

My immediate guess is she'd typically die in some self-sacrificial way to ensure he'd make it further because with her love for him, she no longer really cared at all about her revenge and all that. So she'd end up not having all the power she'd need and considering the tower was made unfair and brutal by design....

And we can't even say her sacrifices weren't necessary for his progress since he'd only beat it the one time before it became real.

See, folks? He just wanted to keep his wife alive and always planned to tell her everything.

At least the payoff was worth it. That smile on Alice really does say everything that needs to be said.

He does reciprocate. He just didn't want to show it before she had her full powers again because she always died if he confessed early and his whole thing has been using his knowledge to work around all the dead ends that he's learned about the hard way when it was still a game.


So he was trying to think of a way to get her out of the funk he knew he caused without having to confess to her and risk her dying. That's what the whole "what do I do to make her think rationally" was about. He doesn't want her to die from him doing the thing that he's seen always gets her killed. It's just that in the end, the situation was screwed enough that he decided he'd rather take the risk of her dying later to make sure she stays alive NOW than lose her because another player throwing a tantrum screwed his plans up.

He was also almost completely alone too.

Don't forget, at first he saw her as just another NPC but given time and combined with how complex that "game" was... well... he got hit by dem feels and having everything become real means now there's no way he'd give her up anymore.

Payoff was worth.

Like we all realized, dude was trying to avoid having her die but shit got real and he refuses to risk her dying so he's proposing AND baring everything to her now. Good shit!
