He's had that grudge from the start thanks to what the OG Ed did and never fully trusted him. So him talking about letting his guard down (IE: thinking Ed had changed based on more recent actions) makes sense from at least an outside perspective. What really sells it though is the letter left for him. His girlfriend's in on it, but depending on the details of what she wrote, he'll either have reason to fully believe Ed's just been screwing with him all along or to be pissed because Ed put his girlfriend in potential danger for whatever reason.
