So Nakayama is just an unlucky lad who bought the car which the girl who died to it still lingering around and also she's the one saving his life when they were a kid?

    If I have to guess, Chiaki herself actively choose who can and can't see her. Since she's already know he's taking her to a public space, she has to be visible so he's not branded as crazy.

  I could almost swear she somehow coerced him into buying it.

      There is the fact that he remember being "saved" as a child.
      
      But that doesn't make sense on the current set of events unless... well, something else is going on.

it doesn't work like that. when you've been traumatized since childhood you've already found coping mechanisms and survival strategies that work and it's hard to leave them behind because this is the only thing u know how to do. especially when you are going into later teens and adulthood they become a part of your behaviour and they literally can't be left behind even if they become ineffective and do more bad than good. in reality ruby is rather smart and resourceful, she learned what ppl want from her and played that role perfectly. from my experience with my own issues and people I know, ruby is one of the best representations of ptsd and bulimia I've ever seen, I'd even go as far as to say that she exhibits signs of type A personality disorders

you can't use logic on a traumatized brain, because abuse is inherently illogical, the abused has to mold their life after these illogical circumstances to survive, to a point where they don't know anything else
