I'm going to play the devil's advocate here, but I think that in these situations, said person is most likely insecure about themselves and/or their relationship, were a "voice" in their heads that keeps on repeating about the "what ifs" on their lives, something that can and will keep on going so long as the person with said insecurity fuels those feelings of fear and paranoia. Now I'm not saying that they are right to think that way, but I have to say that the problem is something very tricky to take care of, as the willpower to remove or at least reduce those feelings is not something that can be easily trained, even more so if we include that fear is something really easy to rely on, it's one of the most basic feelings after all
