The smiling demon is a psychopath. He is empty inside so he finds meaning in meaningless killings. What the second master is doing might be a good thing. The smiling demon may think of him as interesting and will not kill him. If anyone just acts plain boring and predictable, smiling demon may be bored and kill him. I don't think he is impulsive. I think he's trying to make any small excuses to kill someone.
