The actual path to take was have her exude the same level of authority she displayed in killing a mage by flashing her associated badge and appropriating both children at once from the parents, saving explanations for later if she felt in the mood for such at all. But doing so would make her look like a cold, calculating bitch instead of someone that the protag could eventually warm up to. Likewise, it would deny this unnecessary scene where we pretend this not-yet-a-man MC has any sense of agency in a higher realm of adulthood when he hasn't even finished the task given to him to justify his leaving home.
