You could look at the kidnapping as unnecessary for the plot, or you could look at it as an impetus for tons of really interesting characterization for almost all the cast.

The plots are weak, but they really don’t have to be strong for this kind of character driven story.

The characters all have very strong and distinct personalities and their behavior follows logically from those personalities. This sounds pretty basic, and it can be, but I can’t tell you how many 100+ chapter manga I have read where I couldn’t tell you more than a single trait for any character, and even to a higher standard this does well on that front. Like after finishing this, I feel I can accurately describe almost every character in detail including how they change over the story. Even certain behaviors that seem to be contradictions (like how the main couple was willing to have sex for an AV at the start of the story but still haven’t had sex since then) not only make sense on a further understanding of their relationship, but are recognized within the story as noteworthy. I’m not describing anything that would be remarkable in isolation, but the consistently high quality of the character writing is something I find really impressive.

You’re not going to believe me, but this is art. Unironically really well written and creative.
